Late drought stalls Central

Schwartz-BrillhartPELLA—Central College followed an impressive first half with a late scoring drought and suffered a 69-63 women’s basketball setback to Coe College Saturday.

The Dutch (2-12 overall, 1-4 Iowa Conference) shot 48.3 percent in rolling up a 35-26 lead at the break. Still up 57-53 with 7:54 left, Central was outscored 10-1 over the next seven minutes. The final six-point margin was Coe’s largest.

Center Andrea Clark (junior, Guthrie Center) gave the Dutch a big lift in her first start of the season and only her second game back after off-season knee surgery. Clark hit 7-of-10 from the floor and scored 17 points with seven rebounds and two blocks. Forward AJ Baker (sophomore, Grinnell)  had 11 points and forward Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) had 10 points with five rebounds. Guard Jordan Waddell (junior) had a strong floor game with a season-high eight assists and no turnovers along with eight points.

Central shot 45.5 percent overall to Coe’s 36.6 percent but was outrebounded 43-35 and committed 22 turnovers. Coe improved to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the league.

Central travels to Mount Vernon Wednesday for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader at Cornell College. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. with the men’s contest at 8 p.m. Cornell is 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the league after falling at home to Luther College Saturday, 66-57.
