PELLA—The shooting percentages were as one-sided as the score as Mount Mercy rolled past the Central College women’s basketball team 86-49 Saturday.
NAIA Mount Mercy hit a steamy 72.4 percent from the field in taking a 56-29 halftime lead, knocking down 7-of-7 3-point goals. The Mustangs (6-6) shot 54.1 percent for the game. Mount Mercy’s Catalina Quintana hit all seven of her shots and finished with a game-high 21 points.
Central (2-7) could must only 25.0 percent from the floor. Guard/forward Kelsey Schuring (sophomore, Pella) had 11 points and three assists while forward AJ Baker (sophomore, Grinnell) added 10 points and guard Jordan Waddell (junior, Guthrie Center) had nine points and four assists.
Mount Mercy outrebounded the Dutch 53-37.
The Dutch were still without three of their top players because of injury. A fourth injury victim, guard/forward Sarah Paulson (sophomore, Ottumwa), returned to action briefly after being sidelined for 10 days. She played eight minutes in the first half.
Central takes a break for final exams next week, then closes its pre-Christmas schedule at home next Saturday against NAIA power Northwestern College in a 2 p.m. game at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
