Hot start lets Central rock Cobbers

Men's basketball | Nov. 28, 2009

Zach Cooper PELLA—In its most impressive showing of the pre-conference schedule, the Central College men’s basketball team shot roared to a 27-6 lead and handed Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) its first defeat, 84-65.

Center Loren Liming (senior, Ames, Gilbert HS) had 19 first-half points and finished with a game-high 23. He also had a team-best nine rebounds, narrowly missing his third double-double of the young season.

Central (4-1) shot 62.1 percent in the first half and was up 47-27 at halftime. Concordia-Moorhead (3-1) made an early second-half run, cutting the gap to 55-43 with 12:26 left, but a 12-4 Central burst pushed the advantage to 67-47.

“I expected a really tough-minded game,” said coach Mike Boschee. “Concordia is a good basketball team. For us to come out and dominate the first 10 minutes the way we did is a little surprising.

“But our guys are very competitive and experienced. They understand the challenges that lie ahead of them. It was fun to watch them play.”

Guard Justin Madsen (senior, Fort Dodge, Saint Edmond HS) had 17 points and four assists and earned Boschee’s praise for his role in holding off the Cobbers in the second half.

“We thought they would come back,” Boschee said. “But I thought Justin Madsen did a nice job as a leader. He hit a couple of big threes and made some free throws. That’s what leaders do, they make critical plays and they make critical free throws. Hats off to Justin for stepping up.”

The Dutch also got 12 points and three assists from guard Miguel Ley (senior, San Antonio, Texas, Judson HS) and 11 points from guard Mark Holan (senior, Fontanelle, Nodaway Valley HS).

Central shot 52.8 percent for the game and outrebounded the Cobbers 37-30.

Wednesday the Dutch open Iowa Conference play with a women’s-men’s doubleheader against Simpson College. Simpson took a 1-3 record into a Saturday night game at Wis.-Platteville.
