Center Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) posted a double-double as the Central College women’s basketball team rolled to its first win in the home season opener Tuesday, 70-43 over Grinnell College.
Brillhart had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Dutch improved to 1-3. Despite an undersized lineup, Central held a commanding 59-38 rebounding advantage. Sophomore forward Melanie Hopkins (Earlham) had 10 boards.
Freshmen forwards Alyssa Schwartz (Titonka, WCLT HS) and Nicole Strasko (Roland, Roland-Story HS) each had 11 points. Guard Kelsey Schuring (sophomore, Pella) had seven rebounds and four assists. Central shot 36.4 percent from the floor while limiting Grinnell (2-2) to a chilly 18.3 percent.
Central travels to Wis.-Platteville Saturday for an 11 a.m. game before starting Iowa Conference play next week. The Pioneers are 3-1 after dropping a 73-71 decision Tuesday at Dubuque. Central hasn’t met Wis.-Platteville since 1986 and holds a 2-0 lead in the teams’ all-time series.
