No. 7 DePauw downs Dutch 86-61

Women's basketball | Nov. 21, 2009

Jordan WaddellBLOOMINGTON, ILL.—No. 7 DePauw took advantage of Central College’s lack of size and rolled to an 86-61 victory in the third-place game of the Titan Tip-Off Classic at Illinois Wesleyan Univ. Saturday afternoon.

DePauw (1-1) outrebounded Central 51-33 and did much of its scoring inside. The Dutch are without injured 6-foot-2 center Andrea Clark (junior, Guthrie Center).

“We just get outmuscled so much inside,” coach Jerry Nikkel said.

Guard Jordan Waddell (junior, Guthrie Center) came off the bench to score a team-high 11 points while guard Sarah Paulson (sophomore, Ottumwa) had 10 and guard Kelsey Schuring (sophomore, Pella) had nine points. Forward Melanie Hopkins (sophomore, Earlham) had seven rebounds. Central, which trailed 49-34 at intermission, shot 39.6 percent from the floor.

“We had some people I thought played well,” Nikkel said. “Kelsey Schuring played pretty well both offensively and defensively.

“We fought hard. Now we’ve got to see if we use the experience we got here the rest of the way.”

Central (0-3) makes its home debut Tuesday at 6 p.m. against 2-1 Grinnell College. The teams last met early in the 2006-07 season, an 80-70 Grinnell victory. Central leads the all-time series 6-2.
