Grand View outshoots Central

Women's basketball | Nov. 18, 2009

Sarah PaulsonDES MOINES—After a week filled with illness and injury,  a shorthanded Central College women’s basketball team endured an 82-53 season-opening setback at Grand View Wednesday. An NAIA school, Grand View is already 5-2. The Vikings shot 55 percent from the floor and outrebounded Central 43-31.

"For most of the game we hung in there, until about the last eight minutes," coach Jerry Nikkel said. "I thought we did some good stuff. But defensively we've got some work to do. And they were a lot more physical than we were."

Guard Sarah Paulson (sophomore, Ottumwa) had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Dutch (0-1). Forward Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) had nine points and five rebounds. But Central hit a chilly 27.6 percent from the floor.

"We've got to improve our shooting," Nikkel said.

The road becomes even more daunting for the Dutch this weekend at the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Tip-Off Tournament at Bloomington, Ill., which features three teams ranked in the top seven in the NCAA Division III. Central meets No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan Friday at 7 p.m., then takes on either No. 1 Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) or No. 7 DePauw (Ind.) Saturday. Central fell to Washington last year 90-48 and to DePauw 75-57. The Dutch last played Illinois Wesleyan in the 2006-07 season opener, tumbling 92-69 in the teams’ only previous meeting in the series.
