Brondyke wins league, national honors

Central College punter Kurtis Brondyke, a junior from Clinton, has been named to the D3football.com team of the week.

Brondyke was earlier tabbed as the Iowa Conference football special teams player of the week.

Brondyke, who also handles the team’s kickoffs and plays wide receiver, averaged a season-best 49.4 yards on five punts, including a career-long 78-yarder, in Central’s 17-0 victory over Buena Vista Univ. Saturday. Three of Brondyke’s five punts pinned the Beavers inside their 20-yard line. He raised his school career-record total of punts inside the opponent’s 20 to 53.

For the season Brondyke is averaging 39.0 yards per punt with 11 of his 26 punts landing inside the 20. He’s averaging 58.3 yards on 58 kickoffs with two touchbacks and has caught four passes for 51 yards.

It’s the third time Brondyke has been named to the D3football.com squad, getting tabbed twice in 2007. He was also the league’s player of the week Sept. 24, 2007.

Central, ranked No. 5 in the AFCA Division III coaches’ poll, improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the league, clinching at least a share of its record 30th conference title as well as a 20th NCAA Division III playoff berth. The Dutch close the regular season Saturday at Wartburg College in Waverly.
