Dutch season ends at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE—Much like the rest of the season, the Central College women’s soccer team’s effort was there, but the results on the scoreboard were not as Buena Vista posted a 2-0 Iowa Conference victory Saturday.

That completes a 1-18 season for the freshman-dominated Dutch squad, which was 0-8 in conference play.

Buena Vista (4-13 overall, 2-6 conference) took the lead in the 12th minute and added a goal in the 64th minute. The Beavers held a slight 18-15 shot advantage as Central goalkeeper Abby Norman (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) mad seven saves. The Dutch forced Buena Vista goalkeeper Justine McGarvey to make 10 saves. Midfielder Jenna Hindman (senior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) had five shots, including four on goal.

“We played well and we fought very well,” coach Colin Kuchy said. “It was a very physical game. But we had a couple of communication breakdowns that hurt us.”

The game marked the close of Central careers for Hindman and midfielder Jessi Steward (senior, Cedar Falls), who were four-year starters.

“As a coach, you ask players to work hard and play in a way that helps motivate others,” Kuchy said. “Jenna and Jessi are the epitome of that. The atmosphere they created in the program was very classy and they were fun to have on the team. They are two players we will thoroughly miss. We’re glad to still have them as part of our alumni family, but we would love to have them again as players.”

But after starting seven freshmen and sophomores Saturday, Kuchy has reason to envision brighter days ahead.

“Our younger players came in and played very well,” he said. “They were able to adapt to the college game and we’re looking forward to having their leadership for the next few years.”
