Three NCAA Div. III national titles
WHITEWATER, WIS.—Central College split a pair of matches once again at the Wis.-Whitewater Invitational volleyball tourney Saturday.
No. 8-ranked Wis.-Whitewater (24-5), which upset previously unbeaten Wis.-Oshkosh, the No. 1-rated team, Friday night, swept the Dutch 25-17, 25-21, 25-22 before Central came back to sweep St. Norbert (Wis.) 25-16, 25-14, 25-23. The Dutch were 2-2 for the weekend.
Central (20-11) got 11 kills from outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (senior, Urbandale) against Wis.-Whitewater while setter Maggie Snyder (sophomore, Alexandria, Minn., Rosemount HS) had 27 assists and libero Chelsea Grieger (sophomore, Pella) had 23 digs.
“They blocked us really well,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “It was a disappointing effort. We didn’t really seem to get after it too hard.”
Against Carroll (20-9), middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) had 11 kills while middle hitter Kiley Meyers (sophomore, Grundy Center) had eight kills and eight blocks.
“Eight blocks for Kiley—that’s a good day,” Clayberg said.
Ripperger had seven kills, Snyder had 33 assists and Grieger had 22 digs.
“We played much better against St. Norbert,” Clayberg said. “We controlled the tempo. Our ball control was good and our movement was good.”
Central returns to Iowa Conference action Tuesday in its home season finale, a 7:30 p.m. match against Buena Vista at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The Beavers are 2-27 overall and 0-6 in league play.
