Central 14th in Georgia tourney

CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN, GA.—The Central College men’s golf team was outshot by several nationally ranked squads and closed in 14th place at the 16-team Royal Lakes Oglethorpe Fall Invitational Tuesday.

The Dutch shot 306-313—619 while No. 3-ranked Methodist (N.C.) rallied with a scorching 290-283—573 to top No. 9 Guilford (N.C.) by seven shots (284-296—580). No. 14 Emory (Ga.) was third at 286-296—582 with No. 2 Huntingdon (Ala.) fourth at 291-294—585. Top-ranked Oglethorpe (Ga.), the host school, tied for eighth with No. 17 LaGrange (Ga.), shooting 299-302—601.

Andrew Townsend (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) was again the Dutch leader, tying for 20th at 72-75--147 with Joel Winters (senior, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) tying for 48th at 76-79—155. Justin Smool (senior, Bagley, Panorama HS) shot 81-76—157 with Jason Harvey (junior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) at 77-83—160 and Alex Huyser (junior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) at 87-84—171.

The meet concludes Central’s fall season.

“I can’t wait for the spring season to get going,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “We know what we need to work on. We’ll start workouts again in a couple weeks and get geared up for spring.”
