Townsend leads Central in Georgia

CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN, GA.— Andrew Townsend (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) shot a 1-over-par 72 as the Central College men’s golf team opened play in Georgia Monday.

Competing in the 36-hole Oglethorpe Royal Lakes Fall Classic at the par-71 Royal Lakes Golf Course, Central is in a field that includes five of the nation’s top eight ranked Division III squads. The Dutch stand 13th out of 16 teams at 306.

No. 9-rated Guilford (N.C.) leads at 284, with No. 14 Emory (Ga.) at 286, No. 3 Methodist (N.C.) at 290 and No. 2 Huntingdon (N.C.) at 291. No. 1-rated Oglethorpe (Ga.), the host school, is 10th at 299.

Joel Winters (senior, Hampton, Hampton-Dumont HS) is tied for 38th at 76, Jason Harvey (junior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) shot 77, Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) had 81 and Alex Huyser (sophomore, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) shot 87.

Coach Charlie Estabrook said Townsend is stepping up to take over the No. 1 spot in the team lineup that was previously held by graduated Iowa Conference MVP Andy Peterson.

“Andrew is filling that role extremely well,” he said. “He’s a great leader on and off the golf course.”

Estabrook is also enthused about the progress being shown by Winters, who has scrapped his way back into the Dutch lineup.

“I’m really happy for Joel,” he said. “He’s continuing to improve.”

But the Dutch still lack consistency as a team.

“We can’t seem to have all pistons firing on the same day,” Estabrook said. “We’re one score away from being where we want to be. We’re close. I still feel we have the personnel to get the job done.”

The tourney concludes Tuesday, wrapping up Central’s fall season.
