Cornell escapes Dutch in 2OT

MOUNT VERNON—A spirited bid for the Central College women’s soccer team’s first Iowa Conference win was spoiled in double overtime at Cornell College Saturday, 2-1.

The Dutch, 0-5 in the league and 1-14 overall, snapped a scoreless tie six minutes into the second half as midfielder Jenna Hindman (senior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) scored her second goal of the season with an assist from midfielder Kristi Klatt (junior, Cedar Falls).

Fifteen minutes later Cornell’s Adrianna Montellano tied it 1-1 to force the overtime. After a scoreless first period, Cornell’s Molly Landeen got the gamewinner 2:04 into the second overtime, lifting the Rams to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

“We played really well,” coach Colin Kuchy said.

Central held a 14-13 shot advantage. Dutch goalkeeper Abby Norman (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) made six saves.

“We had about 50 percent of our shots that were good looks,” Kuchy said. “I was pleased with what we did with that aspect of the game.”

However the Dutch ranks were again further depleted by injury.

“We’re thin but we’re still fighting and we’re still working hard,” Kuchy said.

The Dutch are home Wednesday for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader with Luther College. The men’s contest starts at 1 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field, with the women’s game at 3 p.m. Live stats and a video Webcast of both games will be available through the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.

Luther is 3-1-1 in conference action and 7-6-1 overall.

“Luther’s a quick team and pressures quite a bit,” Kuchy said. “That’s something we’ll be working on quite a bit in practice Monday and Tuesday.”
