Three NCAA Div. III national titles
PELLA—It was the kind of performance Central College volleyball coach Kent Clayberg has been waiting for.
The Dutch (18-8 overall, 2-3 Iowa Conference) scored their first sweep in five conference matches Tuesday, toppling Luther College 25-19, 25-15, 25-22.
“It was an all-around great effort in every part of the game,” Clayberg said. “We’ve been so close all year and this is finally the match it came together.”
Outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (senior, Urbandale) had nine kills to lead a balanced Dutch attack. Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) had seven kills and outside hitter Amy Golly (sophomore, Ankeny) had six. Middle hitter Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) dominated the net with one solo block and five block assists while setter Maggie Snyder (sophomore, Alexandria, Minn., Jefferson HS) had 37 assists.
“Haley just played exceptionally well,” Clayberg said. “She had an incredible night of blocking.”
Luther dropped to 16-7 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Central takes the weekend off for fall break before traveling to Dubuque next Tuesday for an Iowa Conference match at defending champion Loras College. The Duhawks are 8-13 overall and 3-2 in league play. They defeated Central at Pella last season in four sets.
