Oct. 11, 2009Smool leads Dutch in Minnesota
RAMSEY, MINN.—Justin Smool (senior, Bagley, Panorama HS) carded a 72 and tied for 11th place at the weather-shortened Twin Cities Classic Sunday.
Originally scheduled as a 54-hole tournament played on three top courses in the Minneapolis area, Saturday’s round was cancelled because of snow and Monday’s round was also called off because of forecasts for cold, wet weather. Conditions were dry Sunday with little wind and temperatures in the 30s at The Links at Northfork in Ramsey.
Central shot 305 and finished 13th in the 22-team field that included several nationally ranked squads. No. 10 St. John’s (Minn.) won with 289, edging No. 7 Illinois Wesleyan by two shots. Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) shot 293 with St. Cloud State (Minn.) and St. Thomas (Minn.) at 294 and No. 12 Nebraska Wesleyan at 296. Iowa Conference rival tied No. 23 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) for 11th at 302 with No. 25 Luther two strokes behind Central at 307 while Loras shot 315 and Buena Vista had 321.
Andrew Townsend (junior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) shot 75 with Joel Winters (senior, Hampton) at 76 and Kevin Huyser (junior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) and Jason Harvey (junior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) at 82.
“Justin Smool played really well,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “He hit the ball well and his short game was just on today. He was very impressive. “Andrew Townsend started out kind of rough but got some birdies and held his round together.”
Yet Estabrook said the Dutch could easily have been in the top 10.
“It was a disappointing finish,” he said. “But the attitudes were great and the players fought hard.”
Central closes its fall slate with another opportunity to compete with nationally ranked foes at the Oglethorpe (Ga.) Royal Lakes Fall Classic Oct. 18-20 at the Royal Lakes Golf Course in Atlanta. The Dutch were seventh in an 11-team field there last fall.
