Three NCAA Div. III national titles
ST. LOUIS, MO.—The Central College volleyball team won its final match at the Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) Invitational tourney before adding another victory against Webster (Mo.) Saturday.
The Dutch (17-8) defeated Elmhurst College (Ill.) in 23-15, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 15-13 in their morning match-up before heading to nearby Webster Univ. (Mo.) for a 25-20, 25-11, 21-25, 25-20 victory over Webster (Mo.) to cap the weekend with a 3-1 record.
Outside hitter Amy Golly (sophomore, Ankeny) led the Dutch attack against Elmhurst (11-11), racking up 15 kills and 20 digs in the five-setter. Outside hitter Tess Reinig (freshman, Manchester, West Delaware HS) had 13 kills, middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) had nine kills and six blocks, while outside hitter Caitlin Kouba (sophomore, Dubuque, Walhert HS) added eight kills, five blocks, and 15 digs. Setter Maggie Synder (Alexandria, Minn., Jefferson HS) had 31 assists and 19 digs and defensive specialist Chelsea Grieger (sophomore, Pella) recorded 29 digs.
Against Webster, Kouba had 11 kills and hit .478, Jennings had 10 kills and four blocks, and middle hitter Kiley Meyers (sophomore, Grundy Center) had 10 kills.
“We got our offense running much more explosively than it’s been for a while,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “We had a lot more rhythm to our offense.”
Reinig, who made her first collegiate start Friday night, continues to be a nice surprise.
“Tess was outstanding,” Clayberg said. “She did nice job.”
The Dutch return to Iowa Conference play Tuesday, facing Luther College (16-6 overall, 3-1 conference) in a 7:30 p.m. match at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Central defeated the Norse last year at Decorah in five sets.
