Oct. 10, 2009No. 5 Wartburg outshoots Central
VIDEO: Coach Colin Kuchy
PELLA—No. 5-rated Wartburg College got on the board early and posted a 7-1 Iowa Conference win over the Central College women’s soccer team Saturday.
Wartburg (12-0-1 overall, 4-0 conference) recorded two goals in the first 11 minutes and was up 4-0 at halftime. The Knights stretched the lead to 6-0 before midfielder Kristi Klatt (junior, Cedar Falls) broke free after taking a pass from freshman midfielder Ginny Severns (Williamsburg) and scored her team-high fifth goal at 74:52. Wartburg added its final goal in the 81st minute.
Wartburg outshot Central 30-5 as the Dutch slipped to 1-12 overall and 0-3 in the league. Dutch freshman goalkeeper Shelby Austin (Wichita, Kan., Goddard HS) made 11 saves.
Coach Colin Kuchy liked the way his squad battled despite the large deficit while also dealing with injuries and illness.
“We kept fighting and kept working hard,” he said. “That’s a testament to not only our younger players but the leadership of the older players.”
Klatt continues to shine, despite the team’s record.
“Kristi’s having a pretty good season,” Kuchy said. “She continues to work hard. I’m very appreciative of the work rate she has. She’s a tireless leader and pushes everyone to work harder.”
Central is at home again at Wednesday for a league women’s/men’s doubleader against the Univ. of Dubuque. The women’s game kicks off at 1 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field with the men’s game at 3 p.m. The Spartans are tied for third place in the league at 2-1 and are 9-4 overall. Dubuque rolled up a 9-1 win over Central at Dubuque last year.
“Dubuque didn’t lose a whole lot from last year,” Kuchy said. “They are an upperclass-heavy squad like a lot of teams in the league.”
