Oct. 9, 2009Cornell outlasts Central in league tourney
IOWA CITY—In a marathon match that consumed most of Friday evening, Cornell College outlasted Central College women’s tennis team 5-4 in the opening round of the Iowa Conference tournament.
That avenged a 5-4 loss to the Dutch (8-7) in the season opener at Mount Vernon Sept. 1 and drops fourth-seeded Central into the fifth-place match against sixth-seeded Loras College, which was blanked by third-seeded Wartburg College, 5-0. It’ll be a quick turnaround, with the match slated for a 9 a.m. start. Central blanked Loras 9-0 in the teams’ earlier meeting Sept. 12 at Dubuque.
Friday’s match couldn’t have been much tighter. Only one set was decided by more than three points. Five matches had tiebreakers with Cornell getting wins in four.
Central’s Sara Dale (junior, Marshalltown) won at No. 1 singles after teaming with Stephanie Gibbons (junior, Ankeny) to win at No. 2 doubles. The other Dutch victories were from Kayla Donner (sophomore, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS) at No. 5 singles and Jaime Ruisch (freshman, Pella) at No. 6.
