Another OT setback for Central

Men's soccer | Oct. 7, 2009

Brett McKenzieINDIANOLA—Overtime was not kind to the Central College men’s soccer team once again as the Dutch fell 2-1 in double overtime for the second straight game Wednesday, this time at Simpson College.

Nationally ranked Loras College was a 2-1double-overtime winner over the Dutch at Dubuque Saturday.

Simpson pulled out Wednesday’s victory with a header off a free kick. Complete statistics were unavailable.

“It’s a tough loss coming off the Loras match,” coach Garry Laidlaw said.

After a scoreless first half Wednesday, Central (5-6 overall, 0-2 conference), Simpson took the second-half lead. But Dutch midfielder Leland Schipper (sophomore, Ankeny) scored his first goal to tie it at 1-1 late in the second half.

“It was a terrific shot from distance,” Laidlaw said. “I was proud of the way the guys hung in there and battled back to send it into overtime.”

Saturday Central plays another key conference women’s/men’s twinbill as Wartburg College visits, with the women’s game starting at 1 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field and the men’s contest at 3 p.m.

Wartburg is 7-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the league after 2-0 victory over Buena Vista Univ. at Waverly. Central edged the Knights 2-1 at Waverly last year and holds an 11-10-1 advantage in the teams’ all-time series.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” Laidlaw said. “But our guys had a good discussion after the game tonight. I think they’re going to stay hungry and I expect us to come out with a great effort Saturday.”
