Oct. 7, 2009Shorthanded Central shut out, 2-0
INDIANOLA—Coach Colin Kuchy saw improvement but it didn’t translate to the scoreboard as the Central College women’s soccer team was shut out at Simpson College 2-0 Wednesday evening.
Simpson improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the Iowa Conference.
Central (1-11 overall, 0-2 conference) generated more scoring chances than in recent action, Kuchy said.
Statistics were unavailable.
“Overall I thought we played better,” he said. “We created more opportunities for ourselves. We still didn’t put together a full 90 minutes but the players didn’t give up, they kept fighting.”
The youthful Dutch squad, with five freshman starters, remains at less than full strength.
“We’re in a battle with injury and illness right now,” Kuchy said. “But we’re getting good production from our freshmen. They’re growing.”
The climb becomes even steeper Saturday when nationally ranked Wartburg College visits for a league women’s-men’s doubleheader. The No. 7 Knights (11-0-1 overall, 3-0 conference) blitzed Buena Vista Univ. 7-0 at Waverly Wednesday.
Saturday’s women’s game starts at 1 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field with the men’s contest at 3 p.m. Video Webcasts and Live Stats for both games are slated to be offered through the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.
