Oct. 3, 2009Central splits matches
PELLA—The Central College women’s tennis team had to move indoors because of cold, wet weather and split two matches in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse.
The Dutch (7-5) fell to perennial Iowa Conference contender Luther College 6-3 before taking care of Augustana College (Ill.) 7-2.
Central prevailed against Luther (12-2) at No. 3 singles with Emily Swartz (sophomore, Eldora, South Hardin HS) and No. 5 with Kayla Donner (sophomore, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS). The team of Donner and Faith Bliss (senior, Ottumwa) won at No. 1 doubles.
After dropping two of three doubles matches against Augustana (6-9), the Dutch swept all six singles matches. Sara Dale (junior, Marshalltown) and Stephanie Gibbons (junior, Ankeny) were 8-6 winners at No. 2 doubles. Dale also won at No. 1 singles, followed by Bliss, Swartz, Gibbons, Donner and Jaime Ruisch (freshman, Pella). Central wraps up its dual season by playing host to Grinnell College Wednesday in a 4 p.m. match. The Pioneers defeated Central last year at Grinnell, 8-1.
