Haley BrillhartDUBUQUE—Central College knocked off No. 6 St. Thomas (Minn.) in splitting a pair of matches at the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle volleyball tourney Saturday.

Central (14-6) surprised the Tommies 27-25, 25-13, 22-25, 26-24 but was then swept by No. 17 Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) 25-18, 25-23, 29-27. The Dutch split four matches in the two-day tourney.

In the win over St. Thomas (14-4), outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (senior, Urbandale) had 18 kills. Middle hitters Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) and Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) each had 12 kills. Setter Maggie Snyder (sophomore, Alexandria, Minn., Rosemount HS) had 42 assists while libero Chelsea Grieger (sophomore, Pella) had 21 digs.

“Our defense was outstanding,” coach Kent Clayberg said, citing back-row performances from Grieger, Liz Sanders (sophomore, Clive, Valley HS), Jenna Gillette (senior, Caledonia, Ill., Belvidere HS) and Nichole McGrew (junir, Elk Run Heights, Don Bosco HS)

Against Concordia (10-5), Brillhart had 13 kills and Ripperger had 12. Snyder had 30 assists and 18 digs and Grieger had 25 digs.

“The defense played very well but our offense could not get anything generated,” Clayberg said.

Brillhart was named to the all-tournament team.

Central returns to Iowa Conference play Wednesday, facing preseason league favorite Simpson College (10-9 overall, 3-1 conference) at Indianola in a 7:30 p.m. match.
