Central sweeps own tourney

PELLA—Justin Smool (senior, Bagley, Panorama HS) fired a 76-74—150 in soggy conditions to help the Central College men’s golf team capture its Ryerson Fall Classic Saturday.

Competing at the par-72 Bos Landen Golf Club, Smool took the individual title as Central players swept the top five spots. Teammate Andrew Townsend (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) was second at 77-74—151 while Alex Huyser (junior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) tied for third at 79-78—157. Sharing third was Drew Osier (freshman, Austin, Minn.) of Central’s second team, the White squad, at 76-81—157. Chris Crawford (junior, Conrad, BCLUW HS) of the first unit was fifth at 80-79—159 with Central’s other first-team player, Jason Harvey (junior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS), 11th at 82-81—163.

Central breezed to first at 312-305—617 with Kirkwood second at 331-321—652 in the seven-team meet. Central’s third team, the Black squad, was third at 329-339—668 followed by Graceland at 340-329—669, Simpson at 337-335—672, the Central White team at 329-346—675and William Penn at 360-395—755.

Collin Tjepkes (freshman, Jefferson) topped the Black squad, tying for 12th at 84-80—164.

Central joins a field loaded with the region’s top teams at the 54-hole Twin Cities Classic in Minneapolis, Minn., starting next Saturday.
