Second half carries Loras past Central

DUBUQUE—A five-goal second-half explosion let Loras College outdistance the Central College women’s soccer team 6-0 Saturday.

Loras (7-4-1 overall, 2-0 Iowa Conference) scored in the 32nd minute but was still clinging to a 1-0 lead at intermission.

However the Duhawks made it 2-0 with the first of two Kate Young goals just 2:40 into the second half, stretched it to 3-0 in the 57th minute, then added the final three tallies in a 7-minute span.

The Dutch (1-10 overall, 0-1 conference) were unable to mount a counterattack in their league opener, getting outshot 37-1. Goalkeeper Shelby Austin (freshman, Wichita, Kan., Goddard HS) made 14 saves.

Central travels to Indianola Wednesday for its seventh consecutive road game, taking on Simpson College in a league contest at 5 p.m. as part of a women’s-men’s doubleheader. The men’s contest kicks off at 7 p.m. Simpson outscored Central 6-0 at Pella last season and holds an 11-4-1 lead in the teams’ series. Simpson is 0-1 in league play and 4-5 overall.
