Central 11th in Wisconsin tourney

EAU CLAIRE, WIS.—Fierce winds and cool temperatures helped send scores soaring and the Central College men’s golf team placed 11th in a strong 14-team field at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational Monday.

The Dutch shot 319-334—653 in the 36-hole tourney at the par-72 Eau Claire Country Club.

No. 10-rated Saint John’s (Minn.) shot 302-324—626 to edge rival St. Thomas (Minn.) which had 313-314—627 and No. 23 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), which shot 308-320—628. Wartburg climbed to eighth at 320-319—639 while No. 25 Luther shot was 10th at 315-336—651.

Andrew Townsend (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) shot 77-81—158 and tied for 18th. Alex Huyser (junior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) had 81-84—165 with Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) at 81-84—165, Matt Stock (senior, Queen City, Mo., Schuyler County HS) at 84-85—169 and Brent Messmore (sophomore, Hudson) at 80-90—170. At-large entrant Drew Osier (freshman, Austin, Minn.) shot 85-85—170.

“The wind was a pretty consistent 30 mph,” coach Charlie Estabrook said, who noted that tricky pin positions added to the challenge. “It was unbelievable. But that’s not an excuse. We short-sided ourselves way too much. When conditions are bad, you need to aim at the fat of the green. And our ball-striking wasn’t very good.

“But we’ll come back next week and get better.”

Central plays host to the Ryerson Fall Classic at Pella’s Bos Landen Golf Club Friday and Saturday.
