Central ninth at Eau Claire tourney

EAU CLAIRE, WIS.—Central College is ninth in a wind-swept field after the first round of the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Collegiate Invitational men’s golf tourney at the Eau Claire Country Club Sunday.

Andrew Townsend (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) shot a 77 on the par-72 course. Brent Messmore (sophomore, Hudson) had 80 with Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS)  and Alex Huyser (junior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) at 81 and Matt Stock (senior, Queen City, Mo., Schuyler County HS) at 84. At-large entrant Drew Osier (freshman, Austin, Minn.) shot 85.

Temperatures were in the high 50s with wind gusts above 30 mph.

No. 10-ranked Saint John’s (Minn.) leads with 302. Host Wis.-Eau Claire’s second team stands second at 305, followed by the Univ. of Manitoba at 306, No. 23 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) at 308, No. 18 Wis.-Stout at 309, St. Thomas (Minn.) at 313, No. 25 Luther at 315, Viterbo (Wis.) at 316, Central at 319 and Wis.-Eau Claire at 321. Several other teams are also in the field.

“Conditions were very tough, but they were tough for everyone,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “We did not execute at all. We had some poor decision-making at times, but mostly it was just execution.”

The 36-hole tournament concludes Monday with the Dutch teeing off at 9:30 a.m.
