Sept. 25, 2009Paulson takes league lead
CEDAR FALLS—Central College’s Sarah Paulson (sophomore, Ottumwa) took the early lead in her bid to defend her title at the Iowa Conference women’s golf tourney Friday.
Paulson carded a 1-over-par 73 at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls in the opening round of the 72-hole tournament. Ellen Rickert of Wartburg is next with 74.
Central shot a season-low 322, but trails defending champion Wartburg by 11 shots. Wartburg has four players among the top five in the individual standings. Simpson is third at 335 with Luther at 337 and Coe at 354. The tournament start was delayed for an hour because of wet conditions.
Eva Downes (senior, Woodstock, Ill., Marion Catholic Central HS) is eighth for Central at 81, with Kaurie Kincaid (freshman, Knoxville) tied for ninth at 82, Ashley Smith (freshman, Johnsburg, Ill.) tied for 15th at 86 and Nicole Wenstrand (junior, Essex) tied for 18th at 87.
Central tied for second in the conference last year, its highest finish since 1993.
The tourney continues Saturday at Pheasant Ridge starting at 9 a.m. The final 36 holes will be played next Friday and Saturday at the Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah.
