Three NCAA Div. III national titles
PELLA—The momentum the Central College volleyball team carried through its first two sets Tuesday in the home opener with Coe College appeared to have left the building.
Coe (3-10 overall, 1-2 Iowa Conference) had stormed back to take the next two sets and was up 3-0 in the fifth before the resurgent Dutch took a 3-0 deficit, turned it into a 12-6 lead and took the match 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-11.
“We got a couple of key blocks in game five,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “This is a team that either plays with energy or it doesn’t. We stuck a couple of big blocks and suddenly the juice comes back.”
Right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (junior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had 17 kills and hit .316 for the Dutch (12-3 overall, 1-1 conference). Outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (senior, Urbandale) had 14 kills while setter Maggie Snyder (sophomore, Alexandria, Minn., Jefferson HS) had 48 assists in the two-hour match.
Central, which was making its home debut after a rigorous 14-match road stretch, gets a rare weekend off then returns to conference play next Tuesday, playing host to Cornell College in a 7:30 p.m. match.
