Central fifth in powerful field in Illinois

BLOOMINGTON, ILL.—Central College is fifth in a talented 20-team field after the first round of the Illinois Wesleyan Univ. Fall Classic.

The 36-hole, two-day tourney is being played at the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course in Bloomington with a field that includes 10 nationally ranked squads.

Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) leads with 315 followed by Wis.-Eau Claire at 324, Olivet (Mich.) at 330, Illinois Wesleyan at 335, Central at 336 and Wis.-Whitewater and Maryville (Mo.) at 337. Loras is the only other Iowa Conference school in the field and shot 375.

Sarah Paulson (sophomore, Ottumwa) is tied for eighth after shooting 80. Eva Downes (senior, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) shot 82 and is tied for 14th. Freshman Ashley Smith (Johnsburg, Ill.), in her first varsity appearance, shot 86, Kaurie Kincaid (freshman, Knoxville) had 88 and Nicole Wenstrand (junior, Essex) had 101. Ali Miller (sophomore, Davenport, North HS) played as an at-large entry and shot 87.

“Individually nobody played great but everybody worked hard and kept grinding it out to give us a pretty decent team score,” coach Jodee Schaben said.

Schaben said it took the players time to adjust to the course.

“It’s a tough course,” she said. “It’s fair, but the greens are really hard and there’s a lot of trouble behind the greens. The challenge is getting it there without it rolling off the back.

“But the players had a real good practice session after our round and I think they feel more confident going into tomorrow.”
