Dutch get first win in OT

MONMOUTH, ILL.—Nearly three weeks of frustration melted away as freshman forward Sierra Kuhns (Adel, ADM HS) booted home an overtime goal for the Central College women’s soccer team’s first victory of the season, 3-2 at Monmouth College (Ill.) Saturday.

Now 1-6 in 2009, the Dutch snapped a 10-game losing streak. Monmouth slipped to 1-5.

After a scoreless first half, midfielder Kristi Klatt (junior, Cedar Falls) recorded an unassisted goal in the 54th minute. Monmouth’s Kerry Kost answered just over two minutes later. Midfielder Jenna Hindman (senior, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) put Central up 2-1 with her first goal, scoring on a penalty kick at 62:15. But Amy Unzicker tied the game for Monmouth in the 70th minute and the teams headed to overtime.

Kuhns got the winner just 1:30 into the extra period.

“This should give us a massive confidence boost,” coach Colin Kuchy said. “It shows us that we can score goals and that we can compete against a good team and get a good result.”

Goalkeeper Abby Norman (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) got the win in her first start of the year, recording 14 saves.

“Abby had a very good game,” Kuchy said. “She stepped up and made some really good saves. She kept us in it the entire game.”

Central continues its seven-game road swing Tuesday with a non-conference contest at Grand View Univ. at 6:30 p.m. in Des Moines. The Vikings took a 2-6 record into a Saturday evening game at William Penn Univ. Grand View holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series with Central but the teams haven’t met since 2002.
