Three NCAA Div. III national titles
RIPON, WIS.— The Central College volleyball team regained its footing with a pair of three-game sweeps at the Ripon (Wis.) Invitational Friday night.
After suffering a disappointing loss in the Iowa Conference opener Tuesday, the Dutch (9-3) swept Ripon (Wis.) 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 and Maranatha Baptist (Wis.) 25-18, 25-16, 25-22.
Against Ripon (5-10), outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (senior, Urbandale) and right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (junior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) each had 11 kills. Ellingson hit a match-high .400. Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) had eight kills while setter Maggie Snyder (sophomore, Alexandria, Minn., Rosemount HS) had 25 assists. Libero Chelsea Grieger (sophomore, Pella) had 20 digs and outside hitter Caitlin Kouba (sophomore, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had 11.
In the win over Maranatha Baptist (6-5), coach Kent Clayberg used his entire bench. Middle hitter Haley Brillhart (sophomore, Pella) led with 10 kills while Jennings had eight. Snyder had 26 assists and outside hitter Amy Golly (sophomore, Ankeny) had 10 digs.
“We played with much better discipline,” Clayberg said. “We made some positive steps.”
Clayberg said Jennings improved as the night progressed.
“Lindsay was swinging very freely,” he said. “She was quick to the ball. And Haley Brillhart did a nice job off the bench.
“We were much more together and much more in control of the mental aspect of the game.”
Saturday the Dutch square off against Lawrence Univ. (Wis.) at 10 a.m. and Carroll Univ. (Wis.) at 2 p.m. It’s Central’s first-ever meeting with Lawrence while the Dutch hold a 3-0 lead in the all-time series with Carroll.
