Sept. 18, 2009William Jewell outlasts Dutch
PELLA—William Jewell College (Mo.) won a pair of tiebreakers and pulled out a 6-3 victory over the Central College women’s tennis squad in a lengthy match Friday.
Meanwhile the Dutch men scored victories in two of three doubles matches but were swept in singles in a 7-2 defeat.
The Central women (5-4) got wins at No. 4 singles from Kayla Donner (sophomore, Metamora, Ill, Metamora Township HS) and No. 6 from Stephanie Gibbons (junior, Ankeny). Central also came out on top at No. 2 doubles with Gibbons and Emily Swartz (sophomore, Eldora, South Hardin HS).
“William Jewell is a strong team but we had a chance to win it 5-4,” coach Steve Tyler said, noting the third-set tiebreakers that broke the Cardinals’ way.
The Dutch were without Faith Bliss (senior, Ottumwa), the team’s No. 2 singles player who typically also plays at No. 1 doubles but is sidelined by injury.
“We really miss Faith, she makes us better,” Tyler said. “She’s been playing well.”
Bliss is likely to be out at least a few more days.
The Central men (2-1) were winners at the top two doubles’ slots. Dan Bowser (junior, Fort Dodge) and Luke Boyd (senior, Fort Dodge) won at No. 1 with Jacob Dreyer (junior, Cedar Falls) and Seth Harris (sophomore, Waverly, Neb.) taking No. 2.
“That’s terrific to do that against that team,” Tyler said. “William Jewell is a real solid NAIA program.”
Both Central teams take on another NAIA club Saturday, meeting St. Ambrose Univ. at 1 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts in Pella.
