Dale wins two against Truman State

PELLA—Sara Dale (junior, Marshalltown) helped win a pair of matches but the Central College women’s tennis team was outlasted by Truman State Univ. (Mo.) 6-3 Wednesday.

Dale knocked off Truman State’s Maggie Schutee at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9. Dale earlier teamed with Stephanie Gibbons (junior, Ankeny) and was dominant at No. 2 doubles, posting an 8-0 win.

“Stephanie and Sarah were fabulous today,” coach Steve Tyler said.

Central (5-3) also got a victory at No. 1 doubles with Faith Bliss (senior, Ottumwa) and Kayla Donner (sophomore, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS), 9-7.

However the Dutch were forced to make a lineup adjustment in singles because Bliss aggravated an injury in her doubles match and couldn’t continue. But Tyler said his squad had a strong showing against the Division II Bulldogs (1-0).

“I thought we played great,” he said. “To win two of the three doubles matches was huge. That put us in a position to really compete in singles.

“We’re coming out much more competitively. There are many more balls in play and we’re making the other team work for it.”

Tyler said the Dutch are making a united effort.

“We battled up and down the lineup. We’ve been emphasizing doubles and volley play all fall. Doubles are such a momentum factor.”

Central’s women’s and men’s squads each square off against William Jewell College (Mo.) Friday at 3:30 p.m. It’s the first dual of the fall for the Cardinals, an NAIA team in the process of moving to the NCAA Division II.
