Sept. 13, 2009Central third in 22-team tourney
WAVERLY—Coach Jodee Schaben continued to see progress in the Central College women’s golf team as the Dutch tied for third in the 22-team Wartburg Fall Invitational Sunday.
Central shot 330-331—661 in the two-day tourney at the par-72 Centennial Oaks Golf Course. Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) fired a sizzling 325-306—631 to run away with the title. Host Wartburg followed at 323-319-642 and Central shared third with Carleton (Minn.). Central’s junior varsity team, the White squad, placed 15th at 387-363—750.
Eva Downes (senior, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS), who shared the first-round lead after a career-best 73 Saturday, came back with 78 to place second at 151, just a shot out of first. Her 78 was still better than her previous career best of 79 heading into the weekend.
Sarah Paulson (sophomore, Ottumwa) tied for third at 77-77—154 with Kaurie Kincaid (freshman, Knoxville) at 90-87—177, Nicole Wenstrand (junior, Essex) at 90-90—180 and Ali Miller (sophomore, Davenport, North HS) at 91-89—180.
“Yesterday, obviously Eva (Downes) played amazing and Sarah played great but as a team I thought we just played OK,” Schaben said. “Today, it was just fun to coach. Everyone was striking the ball well and making shots.”
Schaben was especially impressed with how Downes held her game together after a rocky start.
“She started double-double (double-bogey) on the first two holes,” Schaben said. “But she refused to let it turn into a bad round and followed that up with two birdies. She was very mentally strong. The team was mentally into the round all day.”
Schaben was also encouraged by the play of freshman Ashley Smith (Johnsburg, Ill.), who shot 91-83—174 for the White team.
“Things clicked for her today,” Schaben said. “I knew she was a good player and it was nice to finally see it all come together for her.”
The Dutch tackle another large field at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at the Ironwood Golf Course in Bloomington, Ill. next Saturday and Sunday. The Dutch were 11th in a 23-team field last year.
Central’s White team will compete in the St. Ambrose Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
