Sept. 12, 2009Dutch sweep Dubuque, Loras
DUBUQUE—The Central College women’s tennis team had a productive trip to Dubuque Saturday, sweeping the Univ. of Dubuque and Loras College by 9-0 scores.
Central (4-2) dominated Dubuque, winning all six singles matches in straight sets. The Dutch had to pull out a pair of three-set victories to complete the shutout over Loras (6-2), with Kayla Donner (sophomore, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS) and Jaime Ruisch (freshman, Pella) prevailing at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
“We played lights-out against both teams,” coach Steve Tyler said. “It’s not easy to keep your focus in situations like that. Sometimes we’ve played one really good match and then had a letdown. That’s happened twice this season already. But we came right out against Loras and took charge. Faith Bliss (senior, Ottuwma) got a real quick win and that set the tone for the match.
“It was nice to see that focus the whole day.”
The Dutch are home Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match with Simpson College at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts.
