Three NCAA Div. III national titles
SUPERIOR, WIS.—Central College rallied for a five-set win over St. Catherine Univ. (Minn.) and captured the Univ. of Wis.-Superior Invitational volleyball title Saturday.
The Dutch, 7-2 overall, posted a 4-0 mark in the two-day tourney. Central swept host Wis.-Superior (6-3) Saturday morning 25-12, 25-13, 25-16, then outdueled St. Catherine (7-5) 25-23, 12-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-13.
Right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (junior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had 10 kills against Wis.-Superior, hitting .529. Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) had nine kills and hit .429 and outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (senior, Urbandale) had eight kills. The Dutch hit .434 in the 75-minute match. Statistics from the St. Catherine match were not available.
In Friday night’s matches, outside hitter Caitlin Kouba (sophomore, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had 13 kills and hit .400 in a 3-1 victory over St. Scholastica (Minn.) while had Jennings had 11 kills. Jennings led with 12 kills in a 3-0 win over Hamline (Minn.) and Ellingson had 10 kills.
Central opens Iowa Conference play Tuesday with a match at Wartburg College in Waverly at 7:30 p.m. The Knights are 4-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
