Sept. 12, 2009Downes fires 73 to share Wartburg lead
WAVERLY—Central College's Eva Downes (senior, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) fired a career-best 73 and is tied for first place after the opening round of the 36-hole Wartburg Fall Invitational Saturday.
Central stands third in the 22-team field.
Playing on the par-72 Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly, Downes shot 36-37—73 and shares the top spot with Wartburg’s Ellen Rickert. She blew past her previous best of 79, shot April 15, 2007 at the Northfield (Minn.) Golf Course.
Host Wartburg leads the tourney at 323 with Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) at 325, Central at 330 and St. Thomas (Minn.) at 335. Central’s second unit, the White squad, is 19th at 387.
Sarah Paulson (sophomore, Ottumwa) is tied for third at 77 with Kaurie Kincaid (freshman, Knoxville) and Nicole Wenstrand (junior, Essex) next with 90 and Ali Miller (sophomore, Davenport, North HS) at 91.
Freshman Ashley Smith (Johnsburg, Ill.) tops the White team at 91.
The tourney concludes Sunday.
