Sept. 12, 2009Harvey fires 69 for Central
MARION—Central College’s Jason Harvey (junior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) shot a 3-under-par 69 and is in second place at the Mount Mercy Cropper Classic.
The Dutch are fourth in the 24-team tourney at 293, trailing NAIA schools St. Ambrose and William Woods (Mo.) at 286 and Lindenwood (Mo.) 292. Central’s nearest Division III foe is Illinois Wesleyan in fourth at 294. Central’s second team, the White squad, is 15th at 310.
Matt Stock (senior, Queen City, Mo., Schuyler County HS) shot 73 for Central in its fall season opener. Andrew Townsend (senior, Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley HS) shot 74 while Justin Smool (junior, Bagley, Panorama HS) and Russ Katz (sophomore, Chicago, Ill., Downers Grove North HS) had 77.
Brent Messmore (sophomore, Hudson) shot 70 to lead the White team.
"I’m pretty pleased for our first round of the year,” coach Charlie Estabrook said. “I’m hoping to see a lot of consistency from one through five on the varsity. I think we’ll see players taking turns in shooting the low round. We won’t be relying on one player.”
The 36-hole tourney concludes Sunday.
