Dutch win two in Wisconsin tourney

Volleyball | Sept. 11, 2009

Lindsay JenningsPELLA—Four days after returning from tournament play in Oregon, the Central College volleyball team made the long trek to the Wis.-Superior Invitational and opened with a pair of victories Friday night.

The Dutch (5-2) were winners over Hamline (Minn.) 25-15, 31-29, 26-24, then got past St. Scholastica (Minn.) 25-13, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18. Hamline is 4-2 while St. Scholastica is 2-8.

“Hamline is a hard team to play,” coach Kent Clayberg said. “We had some gutty finishes to get the win, but we put ourselves unnecessarily in tough situations.”

Clayberg also gave the St. Scholastica match mixed reviews.

“At times we were very good and other times we were very tentative,” he said. “But we were able to play a lot of people.”

Central completes play in the tourney Saturday. The tournament schedule was again reshuffled and the Dutch now face the College of St. Catherine (Minn.) at 10 a.m. and take on host Wis.-Superior at noon. St. Catherine is 5-4 after sweeping a pair of matches Friday night while Wis.-Superior took a 3-4 record into the night’s action.
