Grinnell outscores Dutch, 5-1

GRINNELL—Grinnell College grabbed an early lead it never relinquished in a 5-1 decision over the Central College women’s soccer team Wednesday.

Grinnell’s Lauren Cantley got the Pioneers (1-2) on the board in just the third minute and they held a 3-0 advantage at intermission. It was 4-0 before Central sophomore midfielder Caroline Bartko (Ingleside, Ill., Grant HS) recorded her first goal of the year with 2:35 left in the game. But Grinnell’s Cantley answered with a final tally with just 42 seconds remaining.

The young Dutch (0-4) were outshot 29-8. Goalkeepers Shelby Austin (freshman, Wichita, Kan., Goddard HS) and Abby Norman (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) each recorded seven saves.

Central returns home to take on Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in a first-ever meeting Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Golden Gusties are 2-1. The Central men and women will be playing Gustavus Adolphus simultaneously, with the men competing on the Central game field in the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex and the women on the nearby upper field—previously used as Central’s game field--west of Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
