Central's Lackey gains Div. III honor

PELLA—Central College running back Jarred Lackey (junior, Somerton, Ariz., Cibola HS) has been named to the D3football.com team of the week.

Lackey, who shared the starting quarterback position at Central last year and has also played at a defensive stinger spot and practiced at linebacker and S-back, was moved to running back less than two weeks prior to Saturday’s opening game. He came off the bench in the second quarter and rushed for 143 yards on just seven carries. On his first collegiate carry Saturday at Lakeland College (Wis.), he broke free for a 61-yard touchdown run, sparking a 40-17 win. On Central’s next possession Lackey’s 47-yard run set up another Dutch TD.

Lackey’s total was the most gained by a Central running back since 2006.

The Dutch moved into No. 25 in the Division III rankings. They’ll tackle No. 7 Wis.-Stevens Point in their home opener Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
