Dutch defeat Graceland, 6-3

PELLA—The Central College women’s tennis squad avenged one of last season’s defeats with a 6-3 victory over Graceland Univ. Monday afternoon.

The Dutch men, opening the non-traditional portion of their schedule, were blanked by the Yellowjackets, 9-0.

The Central women (2-1) trailed after the doubles matches but took five of six singles matches. Dutch winners were Faith Bliss (senior, Ottumwa) at No. 2, followed by Emily Swartz (sophomore, Eldora, South Hardin HS), Stephanie Gibbons (junior, Ankeny), Kayla Donner (sophomore, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS), and Jaime Ruisch (freshman, Pella).

Bliss and Donner also teamed to win at No. 1 doubles.

Graceland had stymied Central last fall, 7-2, at Lamoni.

Central is back on the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts Tuesday against Wartburg College at 3:30 p.m. Even though this is coach Steven Tyler’s first year as Central’s head coach, the Wartburg match carries a little added significance. His son, Matt Tyler, is in his first year as Wartburg’s head coach.

Last season, without any involvement from the Tyler family, Central defeated the Knights at Waverly, 7-2. Wartburg heads into Tuesday’s action with a 3-2 record.

The Central men went into Monday’s dual with Graceland expecting the Yellowjackets to be one of the strongest teams on the Dutch schedule, and they did not disappoint, winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Next up on Central’s four-match fall slate is a contest with Simpson College at Pella next Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 3:30 p.m. at home.
