Three NCAA Div. III national titles
FOREST GROVE, ORE.—Central College closed the Pacific (Ore.) Boxer Kickoff volleyball tournament with a 3-1 mark, splitting a pair of matches Sunday.
Central (3-2 overall) played a pair of two-hour, five-set matches. The Dutch rallied from two sets down for a 22-25, 24-26, 25-12, 25-7, 15-13 victory over Willamette (Ore.), then fell to host Pacific (Ore.) 25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10. Pacific improved to 4-0 overall.
Against Willamette, outside hitter Amy Golly (sophomore, Ankeny) had 14 kills and hit .323 while middle hitter Kiley Meyers (sophomore, Grundy Center) had 11 kills and hit a steamy .625 and right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (junior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had 11 kills. Setter Maggie Snyder (sophomore, Alexandria, Minn., Rosemount HS) had 40 assists while libero Chelsea Grieger (sophomore, Pella) had 42 digs.
Outside hitter Michelle Ripperger (senior, Urbandale), whose playing time was limited by illness over the weekend, had a team-high 14 kills against Pacific. Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) had 13 kills while Ellingson had 11 and Meyers had 10. Snyder had 52 assists with seven kills and Grieger had 28 digs. But the Dutch hit just .154 overall.
Central returns to Iowa Monday, then heads to Superior, Wis. Friday and Saturday for the Wis.-Superior tournament. Central takes on St. Catherine (Minn.) Friday at 6 p.m. and Northland (Wis.) at 8 p.m. Saturday Central meets Hamline (Minn.) at 10 a.m. and Wis.-Superior at noon.
