Three NCAA Div. III national titles
FOREST GROVE, ORE.—Rebounding from a disappointing opening night, the Central College volleyball team turned in a pair of promising efforts with two wins at the Pacific Univ. (Ore.) Boxer Kickoff Saturday.
The Dutch (2-1) defeated Schreiner College (Texas) 25-13, 25-21, 24-26, 25-22 and Linfield College (Ore.) 25-23, 27-25, 19-25, 25-22. Central did so despite being without its top outside hitter, senior Michelle Ripperger (Urbandale), who was sidelined by illness.
Against Schreiner (1-3) coach Kent Clayberg was able to play the entire squad, with reserves taking over in the last two sets. Outside hitter Caitlin Kouba (sophomore, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) had a match-high 13 kills while right-side hitter Ashley Ellingson (junior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) had seven kills. Setter Maggie Snyder (sophomore, Alexandria, Minn., Rosemount HS) had 24 assists in two sets while Dena Christian (senior, Story City, Roland-Story HS) had 18.
Central handed Linfield (Ore.) (1-1) its first loss as Snyder had 49 assists. Middle hitter Lindsay Jennings (senior, Atkins, Benton HS) had 16 kills and hit .375 while middle hitter Kiley Meyers (sophomore, Grundy Center) had 13 kills while hitting .429 and Ellingson had 13 kills with eight digs. The Dutch hit .256 overall to Linfield’s .156.
“The thing I really liked (against Linfield) was we had three really tight sets and won all three,” Clayberg said. “That’s very exciting to see. Linfield is very athletic and played good volleyball but we really played well. We were crushing some balls.”
Central wraps up its trip to the Pacific Northwest Sunday, taking on Willamette (Ore.) at 11a.m. (Iowa time) and host Pacific (Ore.) at 3:30 p.m.
