Sept. 5, 2009St. Mary's outscores Central, 4-2
PELLA—St. Mary’s (Minn.) completed a successful weekend in Iowa with a 4-2 victory over the Central College women’s soccer squad Saturday.
St. Mary’s had defeated Simpson 2-1 at Indianola Friday.
The Cardinals (2-0) took a quick lead on a penalty kick in the ninth minute, made it 2-0 at intermission and were up 4-0 early in the second half. Central (0-3) broke through with a pair of late tallies. Forward Sierra Kuhns (freshman, Adel, ADM HS) scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from midfielder Jessi Steward (senior, Cedar Falls) with 8:49 left. Then midfielder Kristi Klatt (junior, Cedar Falls) recorded her second goal of the young season on a penalty kick with 3:48 remaining.
Central was outshot 20-8. Goalkeeper Shelby Austin (freshman, Hayesville, Kan., Goddard HS) made five saves.
The Dutch have their first road test of the year Wednesday, traveling to Grinnell College for a 5:30 p.m. match. The Pioneers overpowered Central at Pella last year 7-0 and hold a 6-0 lead in the all-time series but are off to a 0-2 start. They were blanked by the Univ. of Dubuque Saturday at Grinnell, 2-0.
