Central's Paulson scores 8-shot win

PELLA—Extending the dominance she showed last year as a freshman, Central College sophomore Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) rolled to the Central Invitational women’s golf title Saturday.

Paulson fired 79-79-158 to outdistance Truman State’s (Mo.) Jen Lawson by eight shots. She pushed the Dutch to a second-place finish in the 11-team tourney. Truman State won with 341-336—677 while Central shot 346-348—694 in the two-day tournament. But the Dutch topped defending Iowa Conference champion Wartburg both days. The Knights were third at 357-352—709 with Simpson fourth at 378-345-723 and Luther fifth at 373-378—751.

Central’s second unit, the White squad, was eighth at 398-406—804.

“Sarah was steady and consistent,” coach Jodee Schaben said. “She’s striking the ball well. And if she hit it in a bad spot, she recovered well. She’s got confidence with the driver now, which she didn’t have last year, and she hits it a long ways.”

Dutch freshman Kaurie Kincaid (Knoxville) had a strong debut, tying for eighth at 88-87—175.

“Kaurie didn’t finish real strong either day but she had a very good first showing,” Schaben said. “She’s a very steady player. If she has a bad shot or a bad hole, she doesn’t let it get to her. She doesn’t dwell on it, she just learns from it and moves on.”

Eva Downes (senior, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) was 13th at 90-89-179, Nicole Wenstrand (junior, Essex) was 17th at 91-92—183 and Ali Miller (sophomore, Davenport, North HS) tied for 36th at 109-91—200.

Freshman Ashley Smith (Johnsburg, Ill.) was 32nd for the White squad at 102-94—196. Lindsey Ellenson (junior, Amana, Clear Creek-Amana HS) shot 99-101—200, Molli O’Brien (junior, Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS)  shot 104-98—202, Allison Crooks (junior, Moline, Ill.) had 98-107—205 and Chrissy Lee (freshman, Huxley, Ballard HS) shot 99-118—217.

“We didn’t play to our potential but for a first tournament, I’ll take it,” Schaben said. “We should build some confidence from this.”

The Dutch must now take on Wartburg on its home course, along with a solid field at the 36-hole Wartburg Invitational Saturday and Sunday, played on the Centennial Oaks Golf Course in Waverly.
