Central's Paulson grabs 3-shot lead

PELLA—After spending much of a spectacular freshman year atop the leaderboard, Central College’s Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) opened her sophomore campaign in the same spot, grabbing a 3-shot lead in the first round of the 36-hole Central Invitational women’s golf tourney Friday.

Paulson overcame strong winds and slick greens to card a 79 at Pella’s par-72 Bos Landen Golf Club. Liz Lestmann of Truman State (Mo.) is second with 82. The Division II Bulldogs have the 18-hole team lead with 341. Central follows with 346 in the 11-team tourney, with defending Iowa Conference champ Wartburg third at 357. Luther, which tied Central for second in the league last fall, stands fourth at 373 with Simpson fifth at 378. Central’s second squad, the White team, is eighth at 398.

Another young Central golfer, freshman Kaurie Kincaid (Knoxville), had a credible collegiate debut, shooting 86, and is sixth overall. Eva Downes (senior, Woodstock, Ill., Marian Catholic Central HS) is tied for 11th at 90, Nicole Wenstrand (junior, Essex) shot 91 and Alison Miller (sophomore, Davenport, North HS) had 109.

Allison Crooks (junior, Moline, Ill.) topped Central’s White squad with 98. Lindsey Ellenson (junior, Amana, Clear Creek-Amana HS) and Chrissy Lee (freshman, Huxley, Ballard HS) each had 99, Ashley Smith (freshman, Johnsburg, Ill.) had 102 and Molli O’Brien (junior, Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS) had 104.

The Dutch also had a pair of at-large entries. Kaci Linton (freshman, Keizer, Ore., McNary HS) shot 102 and Moriah Powell (freshman, Wellman, Mid-Prairie HS) had 107.

“I didn’t think we played to our potential but we didn’t hurt ourselves, either,” coach Jodee Schaben said. “I was proud of how they carried themselves. I didn’t see anybody get down. They keep trusting and believing in their swings more than any team I’ve coached.

“The course is in great shape but it played very tough. The greens are really, really fast. With putting and chipping you really had to have a lot of touch to keep it close.”
