Dutch drop opener at Grand View

Volleyball | Sept. 1, 2009

Sara Mouw DES MOINES—The Central College volleyball squad got its season off to a bumpy start with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-13 setback at Grand View Univ. Tuesday night.

Grand View (3-2) played a steady match, according to Dutch coach Kent Clayberg.

“Grand View’s a very good team,” he said. “They played very good defense.”

But Central was left with plenty of things to work on.

“It was a typical opening match,” he said. “There were some things we did really well and some not so well. We didn’t always do a stellar job of making things easy for ourselves, but in terms of executing, I think we’ve got a great base to build on.

“We’ll get more consistent and we’ll get better. The upside for this team is pretty high.”

Central makes a Labor Day weekend swing to the Pacific Northwest, competing in the Boxer Kickoff at Pacific Univ. in Forest Grove, Ore. Saturday and Sunday. The Dutch take on Schreiner (Texas) Saturday at 11 a.m. (Iowa time) and Linfield (Ore.) at 1:45 p.m. Sunday Central meets Willamette (Ore.) at 11 a.m. and host Pacific (Ore.) at 3:30 p.m.
