Sept. 1, 2009Central falls in final-minute flurry
PELLA—Two goals in the final minute of play capped a furious finish to an otherwise defensive battle as the Central College women’s soccer team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Nebraska Wesleyan University Tuesday night.
After falling behind midway through the first half, the Dutch played from a deficit until the final minute when junior Kristi Klatt (Cedar Falls) scored a breakaway goal with assists from senior Jessi Steward (Cedar Falls) and freshman Sierra Kuhns (Adel, ADM HS), leveling the score at 1-1 and seemingly sending the game into overtime. But a Prairie Wolf free kick from 15 feet outside the penalty box was the difference, bouncing off the sidebar and into the net with only three seconds left in regulation.
“I was very pleased with the confidence we showed in our first game,” Kuchy said. “We had a lot of determination and grit tonight, it just didn’t end up the way we wanted.”
Nebraska Wesleyan (1-0) outshot Central 8-3 in the first half. The Dutch (0-1) rebounded with six shots in the second half while the Prairie Wolves duplicated their first-half output.
Klatt and sophomore Lacey Merfeld (Peosta, Dubuque Hempstead HS) led the Dutch attack with three and four shots, respectively.
Central will take on St. Catherine’s (Minn.) Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field. The Dutch were 7-0 losers to the Wildcats in Waverly last fall.
