Sept. 1, 2009Central edges Cornell in opener
MOUNT VERNON—The Central College women’s tennis squad swept the doubles matches and hung on for a 5-4 season-opening win at Cornell College Tuesday.
Faith Bliss (senior, Ottumwa) and Kayla Donner (sophomore, Metamora, Ill., Metamora Township HS) prevailed 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, Stephanie Gibbons (junior, Ankeny) and Sara Dale (senior, Marshalltown) won 8-4 at No. 2 and Emily Swartz (sophomore, Eldora, South Hardin HS) and Trinh Le (sophomore, Des Moines, North HS) won 8-5 at No. 3.
Dale was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles and Jaime Ruisch (freshman, Pella) claimed her collegiate debut match for the decisive point at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
The Dutch will receive a sterner test Wednesday, traveling to Cedar Rapids to tackle defending Iowa Conference champion Coe College in a 3:30 p.m. match.
