July 31, 2009Central breaks academic honor record
PELLA—For a record ninth straight year, the Central College volleyball team has received the AVCA Team Academic Award.
Central and Wis.-La Crosse share the longest active streak in the NCAA Division III, breaking the all-time mark of eight straight years set by Wis.-Eau Claire (1995-2002).
It’s the 10th time overall that the Dutch have captured the academic honor which requires that the team’s combined grade point average for the preceding year be maintained at 3.30 or above (4.0 scale).
Kalamzoo (Mich.) is the all-time selection leader, earning the team academic award 11 times.
Central was among four Iowa Conference schools recognized, joined by Cornell College, Simpson College and Wartburg College. Out of some 400 Division III schools, 77 were honored.
Central compiled a lofty 3.47 combined team grade point average for 2008-09. The Dutch had 17 of 18 varsity players with GPAs of 3.0 and above, with 11 recording GPAs above 3.5, led by senior defensive specialist Maggie Nowicki (Madison, Wis., Edgewood HS) with 3.96. Freshman setter Kiley Meyers (Grundy Center) posted a 3.84 GPA for the year and senior setter Megan Callahan (Dubuque, Wahlert HS) recorded a 3.83.
Central landed six volleyball players on the Academic All-Iowa Conference team last fall, which requires a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
